Fees & Registration
Who Can Attend?
STEM X is open to any young man or woman who will be entering 9th grade in the fall of 2017 and no older than 20 years old on August 4, 2017. Participants do not need to be registered in the BSA currently but will be registered with an Exploring Post as part of their participation at STEM X.
Why Are Youth Registered in Exploring as Part of STEM X?
STEM X is only the beginning! Participants will spend all week exploring their STEM program and experiencing glimpses into other STEM areas. Then on Friday, they will select an Explorer Post to register with that will either focus on the program they spent the week in or another STEM program. Then, the program will continue throughout the rest of the year with monthly activities related to the chosen STEM field, led by the same STEM experts who make STEM X happen! There is no additional fee to register for the year-round Exploring program.
Cost to Attend
Registration for STEM X opens in January, 2017. The full registration fee is $475 per participant. Participants who register with their $200 deposit by March 15, 2017 will receive a $50 discount, making their final fee only $425.
Registration begins online at 8:00 PM on Monday, January 16. Registration is completed at this link: Eventbrite Registration.
If a participant will have difficulty paying the full registration fee and would like to request assistance, there are a limited number of scholarships available. To apply for a scholarship, complete the Scholarship Application and submit to the Old North State Council office no later than May 15, 2017 to be considered. Applicants will be notified of their status by May 31, 2017. Participants applying for a scholarship should have already submitted their $200 deposit with their online registration completed. Scholarships are typically awarded up to 1/3 of the cost of attendance although decisions are made on a case by case basis. There is a limited amount of funding available for scholarships so the committee will allocate those funds as best they can.
Registration for Programs
Participants can only complete one program track during their STEM X week. Registration for individual programs will begin in January, 2017 and will be completed online. Each program has a maximum capacity that will be strictly adhered to as a measure of quality. Program registration is first come, first served and many programs will fill up very quickly. Only one participant can be registered at a time to keep the process fair and prevent any one person from holding spaces for other participants on the registration website. Once registered for a program, the participant cannot transfer that program to another participant who is not already on the waiting list for that program.
Participants will stay in Adirondacks in a designated campsite. Participants cannot request specific campsites as they will be filled based on the needs of the program. Efforts will be made to place participants from the same unit or family in the same campsite if possible. Adult staff will be housed in each campsite to ensure that adequate adult leadership is in place throughout the week and that all Youth Protection policies are being followed.
STEM X is a program for youth only. The only adult participation are those adults selected to teach/lead a STEM X track or those who are on staff to support the program. Parents are encouraged to attend and participate in the College Night event on Wednesday evening.
Refund requests must be made in writing to firstname.lastname@example.org by Friday une 30th to be granted. Requests after this time will only be considered in extreme circumstances such as accident or death in the family or illness with doctor’s note stating that the youth cannot participate.
